We also received an award from the Law Society of the Northern Provinces in 2005 in recognition of Jan Marais’s contribution of more than

35 years to the attorneys’ profession.

About us & how we got here

The Marais Basson Inc. family has grown over the years and our six attorneys remain committed to providing clients with the best legal advice.

Jan Marais established the firm in 1993 and four years later, in 1997, Stefan Basson and Antoinette Basson (née Marais) joined him as directors.

Bringing his conveyancing expertise to the practice, Deon Venter was appointed an associate of Marais Basson in 2003. Carmen Pope, whose expertise includes conveyancing and notarial qualifications, joined the practice in July 2010.

Susra van Staden did her articles with Marais Basson as a candidate attorney and was admitted as an attorney in 2014.

Chané Sinclair-Vermeulen was appointed as an Attorney in 2023.

Our attorneys are supported by 29 dedicated and friendly staff members.

Our two internal claims assessors are our clients’ first point of contact. They venture into the field to assess claims in order to establish the merits of each case.

Marais Basson has two offices – one in Witbank (eMalahleni) and one in Pretoria.

In Pretoria we accept instructions as correspondents in High and Magistrate’s Court matters. We gladly take referrals from colleagues on a fee-sharing basis.

We work countrywide and have litigated in the High Courts of Pretoria, Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, Kimberley, Grahamstown, Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Mahikeng.

We also provide transport for our clients to and from medico-legal appointments and court.

Stefan Basson

Stefan Basson attends to both our Witbank and Pretoria offices. He specialises in personal injury matters, including third-party and medical negligence claims. He has in excess of 25 years experience.

Antoinette Basson

Antoinette Basson (née Marais) is a highly experienced attorney with more than 25 years experience in personal injury claims. She runs the correspondents department in Pretoria and is involved in third-party claims, estates and general legal work.

Deon Venter

Deon Venter is a qualified conveyancer in our Witbank office and has a Master’s degree in Delict Law. Deon and his team handle litigation matters and have a large correspondents and criminal practice at the Witbank Magistrate’s Court. They also handle High Court matters and specialise in wrongful arrest matters and family law.

Carmen Pope, who works in our Pretoria office, is a qualified attorney, notary and conveyancer. Although she specialises in Magistrate’s and High Court litigation, she also drafts wills and other contracts.

Susra van Staden is a qualified attorney who works in the Witbank office. She specialises in Magistrate’s, regional and High Court litigation in Witbank and Pretoria. Susra also does antenuptial contracts, estates and wills.
